The Neighborhood Table is a community meal/soup kitchen program for those in need of a meal, or the companionship of others  to share a meal.

About 4 years ago, Ginny Steen, our founder, was at a church in Waupaca, Wisconsin. She saw a folder advising that "The Bread Basket" supplied a meal to anyone each week. She asked the pastor about it and he explained that they had started "The Bread Basket" at their church because of a need in the community. Later she found out it all started because this pastor asked his congregation, in a sermon, "If Jesus were here today and asked you what you have done for the least of your brethren, what would you say?"

At that time there did not seem to be any interest in Wisconsin Rapids to start a program similar to the one in Waupaca. During the summer of 2003, Ginny's granddaughter, Katelynn Hass, went to the Fox River Valley area to visit some friends she made at church camp. While there she worked at a soup kitchen with the family she was visiting. When she returned home, Kate told her Grandma about her trip and said, "Grammy, remember that soup kitchen thing you tried to start a few years ago? Well, I think you should try it again".

Soon thereafter, Ginny wrote letters to the four churches surrounding the post office which is in the central location  in Wisconsin Rapids. There was an immediate interest and response. Ginny also wrote to the Community Foundation of South Wood County and received a $1000 start up grant. After having several meetings with people who were interested, combined with the local newspaper coverage, The Neighborhood Table project was off and running. The first meal was served on December 31, 2003.  Someone asked "About how long do you think you are going to do this?", and Ginny replied, "Forever!" Through the help of our dedicated volunteers, no one will go hungry if we can help it. We try to reach as many people as we can and hope that those that need our services will speak up and come forward.

The Neighborhood Table services the communities of Wisconsin Rapids, Nekoosa, Port Edwards, Wisconsin and surrounding areas
